While Jayd was originally a superhero design with just the ability to conjure weapons, when I adopted her to the RUNNERS universe, she got the backstory of having the hidden artistic side and the self-loathing about her power not having permanence. I really like that backstory and I find it gives her an emotional core that I find much more interesting than just “assassin for hire.”
I also figured her self-consciousness about being a “defect” would be a great way to have her connect with Sky once she is also called a defect by the pursuing assassins. That similarity was a good way to jumpstart the connection between them and immediately give them some common ground.
Nice backstory. In this new volume with so many new interesting characters, Jayd stands out to me.
I didn’t know Antoni Gaudí left his mark in the Runners Universe. 😉

Yes! It’s always nice to remind myself that some projects have taken even longer than this book. Ha ha.
Now that you mention it, I can see the Gaudi. I actually based the diagonal brick pattern on some architecture we saw in Rome last year. I never knew about that particular construction method before, which I found really interesting. In the penciling and inking, I was just picturing regular brick or tan-like colors. But Robby went with this look in the coloring stage, and I really liked it.

Really like Jayd and her backstory, hopefully we see more of her. Really liking how she and Sky are interacting with each other and hopefully that bond can become something more positive after this volume is complete. On a completely unrelated note I have noticed that the Khoruysa Brimia seems pretty room, maybe Roka should think about hiring new crew after this is over, maybe someone that they met in this volume…
It would definitely be a shame if she only appeared in this one story. One more person for Ril to dislike!
