So here’s something fun and a little different. A while back, friend, comic creator, and instructor Roland Mann asked me for some blank RUNNERS pages for his comic class to use for a lettering exercise, making up their own dialogue in the process.
With Roland’s permission, I thought it would be fun to share some of them here. It was really interesting for me to see what students came up with for plot and dialogue based on the art alone. Please bear in mind that this is student work, and while some techniques may be a bit rough here and there, I don’t want this to be a forum for critique. I just wanted to show some fun takes on the characters and situations. So please be kind with any comments.
This first one captures the bicker-y nature of the scene pretty well. I especially like the characterization of Sky as a money-hungry leader type.
This one is a fun take on the exchange on Free Kespa. Bonus points for use of the term “small death ray.”
This one is pretty entertaining in having Roka conversing in Hulk speak!
And this last one is my favorite. The idea of the crew actually being a band trying to get to a gig is just too awesome. I feel this should have been the premise of the series all along. Ha ha.
I hope you enjoyed these. It’s like a weird RUNNERS mirror universe. Without the goatees.
Just running a little test. I haven’t gotten any comments here on runnersuniverse.com in a while. So I have no idea if people are actually seeing any of these posts. Maybe everyone is getting their interactions from social media instead, maybe there’s some glitch here I need to look into, or maybe people just don’t comment here.
If you are somehow getting this message, please let me know how you are interacting with runnersuniverse.com. Are you getting any kind of notification when I post? Do you just manually swing by the site on occasion to see if there’s something new? Any feedback would be great, so I can get a handle on what to do here. Thanks!
A slightly overdue update: as of a few weeks ago, I finished inking all of Volume 3, Chapter 1! It is an extra long 34 pages, not the usual 24 pages, and I’m happy to report that I think they came out really well! The first batch is currently with my colorist, so I’m anxious to see how that step goes. Hopefully everything will go smoothly and I can start getting pages finalized for upload here on RunnersUniverse.
I would have done this post a couple weeks ago, but for obvious reasons, I got a bit distracted. These are certainly scary times with Covid-19 running amok. I hope everyone out there is staying safe and taking all proper precautions so we can collectively end this as soon as possible. I need to get back to my regular routine of… working from home in relative isolation from the outside world. Ha ha.
If you are cooped up and in need of distraction, now might be a good time to re-read RUNNERS in anticipation of Vol 3 coming. Now, there are even more ways to experience the series:
Webtoon Canvas: http://bit.ly/runnerswebtoon. Read the series for FREE with Webtoon’s unique vertical scrolling format. I have completely reformatted the series into vertical strips for the site, and I actually think it works really well (better than print even) for dramatic and comedic beats. Give it a try and please be sure to Like each individual episode and Subscribe to the series! Those numbers help.
comiXology: http://bit.ly/runnerscomixology. RUNNERS is now part of the Unlimited program, so if you have a subscription, you can now read the series for FREE. Outside of Unlimited, you can buy each digital graphic novel separately. And I also have a 2-chapter FREE PREVIEW issue on the site, so be sure to let your friends know they can check out the beginning of the series that way at no cost!
Comic stores / Amazon / RunnersUniverse store: I wish I could encourage people to still buy physical copies of the books, but right now, it seems either moot or better to err on the side of caution. With Coronavirus concerns closing stores and keeping people at home, I’m not sure how I feel about making trips to the post office to mail packages. So I hope the digital options will suffice for now.
For all options, please be sure to like the pages and posts, subscribe (if the option is available), leave reviews and ratings, and leave comments. I’d love to get RUNNERS on the public radar a bit more, so every algorithm bump from reader engagement will be a great help.
I’ll also be (very belatedly) looking into webcomic sites like TopWebComics, etc, to try to expand the readership as I go forward. If anyone has recommendations for sites, or other general ideas to help promote the series, please feel free to chime in!
All the old Volume 1 black-and-white pages on RunnersUniverse have now been swapped out for the new color versions! So you can now read all the story content on the webcomic site in color. Woot! You can start reading Vol 1 in color HERE.
Like George Lucas with the original Star Wars trilogy, I will now disavow the very existence of the previous version and try my best to wipe all traces of it from the planet. Ha ha. Actually, the printed version of the b&w book is still available (at a discount) in my Store, but since the series is in color now and will be in color going forward, it made sense to replace the old pages on the site with the color versions. All the reader comments are still intact though, including ones that now hilariously reference the b&w art that no longer shows.
FYI, you can also read the series at ComiXology (with its fun Guided View format) and Webtoons (for free, with a really cool vertical scrolling format). Comic stores can also now order the series through Diamond Previews.
Progress continues on Vol 3, with the entire 34-page first chapter fully penciled and now half of it inked and ready to go to the colorist! As always, you can support the series on Patreon, as every little bit helps me continue to produce the series, and you’ll get access to cool bonus content to boot.
The new Jan 2020 Previews catalog is out and comic stores can now order RUNNERS Vol 1 and 2 from Diamond Comics Distributors! The items are spotlighted on pp 342-343 under Serve Man Press. Please encourage your local comic stores to order the series using the following codes:
JAN201968 – RUNNERS TP VOL 01 BAD GOODS COLOR ED ($19.95, Serve Man Press)
JAN201969 – RUNNERS TP VOL 02 BIG SNOW JOB ($19.95, Serve Man Press)
You can also download the Previews order form HERE to email or print out for your comic store. Thanks for any help in getting the books into stores!!
