Poor koala bear alien (Mark Smylie, writer/artist of Artesia and Archaia Studios Press publisher, once referred to the character as such, and the description seemed to stick). Anyway, he clearly gets the short end of the stick during this scene, apparently dying one page after being introduced! But I wouldn’t be surprised if I revisited the flashback crew again at some point, so maybe he’ll turn up again.

Lights on, then they are fired upon, immediately killing a crew member who was armed, but holstered. Nobody identifying themselves as law enforcement or demanding they surrender with their hands up, weapons on the ground..
For all they knew they were being ambushed by bandits.
Not that they could go running to the local cops, being on the wrong side of the law themselves.
How would they know it was the law at all?
All very true! There is definitely a little more to this event that will be revealed in time…
