I always thought it’d be cool for a medium-sized freighter, like the Millennium Falcon, to have its own attached smaller ship that could be used as a cargo shuttle, escort ship, or fighter. So that’s how the Mosquito came about. I figured they’d mostly use the smaller ship to attach to larger freighters to make quick transfers of goods. Thus the actual name “Mosquito.”

All of the characters have wonderfully unique alien designs. My favorite is Roka, maybe because he reminds me of that “Hammerhead” alien from the Star Wars’ Mos Eisley Catina scene, and I’m a sucker for anything that homages Star Wars.
Hey Keith! Welcome aboard. One thing I wanted to do with the character designs was to use real animals for inspiration without just making them look like anthropomorphic real animals. With Roka, I actually used an elephant as the main inspiration, which resulted in the rough skin texture and thick, bulky proportions of the limbs. Ril is based on bits from birds, snapping turtles, and frogs. And Cember’s just based on some six-eyed, squid-bodied person I know.
I think its cool that the first 2 arcs are being put online (and also think people will still buy the books too). personally, my favorite character (the female) and am eagerly awaiting to see what she (and her “sisters”) will be doing and such. Also wondering which conventions you’ll be at – I’m hoping to keep getting some sketches of the rest of the cast! already have 2 of the crew… now just need the rest 😉 keep up the good work, for seeing other artists doing the webcomics/comics thing has me inspired on my own webcomic (ZomBoy, and later another series). Kudos!
hmm any plans for an alien design based on a platypus?
I wouldn’t discount the possibility of a platypus-inspired alien, although that thing already seems a bit alien as is. I like to draw inspiration from nature, and the weirder the better, so a platypus would certainly fit that bill. Get it? “Bill.” Ha ha.
You know, because it has a duck bill.
Genius idea, I have problems fleshing my ideas out to this point, I guess practice makes perfect.
