When I first got these pages back from Wes, my colorist, he had done a lot of grit and grime on the ship interiors. It looked great, but unfortunately, I had to tamp it down a lot. The backstory with Grissom’s ship is that it is a criminal’s former luxury yacht. As such, I wanted it to be a bit nicer and cleaner than some of the other run-down utilitarian ships in the RUNNERS universe.
For the record, I did send that note to Wes with the page. But I know sometimes a random note will get missed, so he ended up doing more grime than the ship needed. I actually have a pet peeve of spending time on artwork that wasn’t necessary when a quick sentence of clarification from the writer could’ve saved me significant time. So I try to be respectful of other artists’ time as well. I’m sure once in a while, I will forget to mention something, but usually, I try to be good about that sort of thing.
Yep, she has fully moved on. She’s still your friend but she’s definitely no longer your crew.
Also, being left behind seems to have soured her on working as part of a team. I can already see how (or at least how I hope) this theme plays out with Roka, Grissom, Sky, and the bounty hunter Sky is trapped with (I forget her name).
Good storytelling!
Where is Ril though? Did he smell Grissom was going to ask for a fee? 🙂
Yeah, I like writing for Grissom, especially with her complicated relationship with Roka and Ril. Speaking of Ril, I have a lot to say later about how he shakes out in this story arc. Originally, I wanted everyone to stay together to go down to the planet to rescue Sky. I especially wanted some Ril/Grissom time to go with the Roka/Grissom time. But realistically, I just could not believe that everyone would go and they would leave the ship dead in space without someone on it. As much as I tried to justify a reason, I couldn’t do it. So someone had to stay behind, and Ril made the most sense, personality-wise.
That said, Ril does show up in the next couple pages. And it’s a sequence I really like, for reasons that I think will carry more weight in the future!
