The art sale scene was a fun one to write. While not super necessary to the story, I thought it would help make Jayd’s character more likeable and also give Sky and Jayd a nice moment of fun interaction. While scams and cons are prevalent in many stories, I have to admit that I only had one scene in mind for inspiration here: the “litmus configuration” scene from Midnight Run (one of my favorite movies), in which Charles Grodin and Robert DeNiro con a store manager out of “bad” $20 bills. This wasn’t really a con on that order, but for some reason, I just had that in mind.
Midnight Run is a fun movie, but unfortunately one of Robert DeNiro’s lesser known films?
I think it had at least one laugh out loud moment for me.
The bonding moment is nice, it might even be super necessary. I’ll come back to it after we see things unfold.
I really love Midnight Run, which overall is a big influence on RUNNERS: trying to get the goods delivered while being pursued by other mercs and mobsters, with lots of action and character banter and heart. Definitely a lesser known DeNiro movie but really deserves more attention. I feel that way about the TV series The Shield as well. Such a great show, in the same vein as The Sopranos, The Wire, and Breaking Bad. But never mentioned with those and largely forgotten at this point, despite being a very highly acclaimed show in its day and really paving the way for all of today’s antihero stories.
Yeah love Midnight Run myself, got a special collectors edition from Shout Factory not too long ago. Really a good movie to watch again and again.
Is that a clay pit or are they just making enough porridge for the entire town?
Did I not mention that they landed on what is known as the “pudding planet?” Mmm…pudding. But yes, they are clay pits. Thus all the sculptures and pottery everywhere.
