After a very brief flirtation with using manga speed lines (in the very first Runners short story in the Small Press Expo 2000 anthology), I decided against using them in the series, since I liked the more cinematic look of panels without them and (more importantly) I found they took a long time to do!
Early on, I was worried that the entire Oniaka chase sequence would be lacking in kineticism without them adding to the look of the action. But I found that I could achieve that feeling of fast movement through extreme foreshortening of ships, tilted angles in panel compositions, and architectural lines and laser bolts that converge at vanishing points to somewhat replicate the converging look of manga speed lines.
Good call. I think the action is very well defined. 🙂
“Open the pod bay doors, Hal.”
There we go. Someone had to say it.
Ha! Let’s say one of those control room aliens is named Hal so we can retroactively believe that that sentence was uttered.
