I like sprinkling little hints of history in here and there, like this reveal that Ril’s the one responsible for bringing Bocce into the group. And more importantly, Bocce actually impressed Ril on some level, which isn’t easy to do.

Roka is hands-down my favorite character. And this is why — I really don’t know what he’ll choose.
Damn you for making me hold my breath all weekend. 🙂
Glad to hear you like Roka. One thing I specifically wanted to do when starting out was to develop each character enough so that any character could be someone’s favorite. While Cember is the easiest to make likeable, I didn’t want him to be the “star” of the group. I’d rather it be a bit more evenly split. With Roka, I did wonder if people would really be drawn to him since he isn’t very flashy (like Cember), or snappy (like Ril), or have any special “powers” (like Bocce and Sky). He’s the guy shouldering the responsibilities and keeping things together. So I love it when people say they like his character a lot, especially since he’s actually the one I identify with the most!
I consider it effective storytelling when an ensemble cast comes together, and while you may have a favorite, it’s not an easy decision. Rather like ‘Firefly’.
I’m not sure whom I like the most yet, but I’m leaning toward Roka.
Roka just feels most central to me; I guess I identify with (& thus like) him most, too.
Just started reading. My favorite is the big rockish guy. From the start where he is reading you get this sense of giant stoney sweety. When I first saw the “Candy Bandit” or whatever that reference was back on the other freighter I thought it meant the rock dude.
Awesome to hear some love for Bennesaud! I didn’t want to go with the typical “brute” character for him, so I felt the need to establish him with the book right from the start. And if you like him in “Bad Goods,” then you’ll probably enjoy the next story arc, “The Big Snow Job,” even more since he features a bit more prominently in that one. As for the “Candy Bandit” line, that wasn’t in reference to him exactly, but I think it’s pretty safe to say he was right by Cember’s side during that particular caper.
fyi.. catching up, started reading from scratch, and omg love the “movie”. thank you
