Yup, at the time I was reading a few manga titles and drew a lot of grayscale inspiration from Battle Angel Alita, Gunsmith Cats, and Eat Man. Graphically, my style is not as bold and striking in just B&W (like, say, Jeff Smith’s Bone artwork), so I felt I needed some grayscale to help flesh out the look. But with the manga titles, I also found that with a decent grayscale job, you really don’t miss the color the way you would with some pure B&W books.
FYI, these pages were originally published in b&w, both in print and here on the website. In 2018, I went back and colored the entire volume and subsequently replaced the b&w pages with the color ones. So you may see some older comments that reference the b&w art. Rest assured, those readers did not have some sort of weird monochromatic vision issues.
I love your use of grey, it replaces something you might see in just black and white.
