This is probably the longest talky scene in a single location that I have done thus far, but I felt it was an important one. With Vol 3, I finally thought I should get to Roka’s backstory. His disdain for smuggling and self-loathing have been hinted at in the previous books, but I wanted to definitively give his origin here.
Getting to really like Dur’dak.
Unknown pasts can be tricky. Delay too long while keep dropping hints can lead to certain expectations. I think revealing (part of) Roka’s backstory at this point is the right time. And it’s an interesting one.
I agree. With some characters, like Bocce, whose arc may be more about where he comes FROM, it probably works well to have prolonged and piecemeal reveals. But with others, like Roka, it makes sense to just get the origin out there, as the bulk of his arc is more about where he’s GOING.
