Back to the snow outfits…
For Bennesaud, he doesn’t typically wear clothing, but I knew he’d at least need access to his finger-cannon gun at some point. Rather than have him whip it out of thin air, I decided to give him wrap-around military-style pouches around the waist. Aside from his gun, I have no idea what else he keeps in them. Maybe Power Bars.
With Cember, I wanted to stick with a flashier style, so he got the brightest colors of the bunch, and his outfit just looks a bit more tailored. I guess it would have to be to accommodate his back horns. Something about the Russian hat style on him is funny to me, most likely because it’s just so impractical and showy. I think it actually gets a little bigger as the story goes on.
For Sky, the outfit is probably reminiscent of Princess Leia’s Hoth outfit. I can’t say I deliberately intended it to be, but that’s sometimes the problem with people like me who grew up on Star Wars. The images become so iconic over time, that you actually start to lose track of what’s “normal” and what’s been burned into your brain by repeated viewings. For instance, when I think “female snow outfit,” I think “quilted pattern.” But I have no idea if that’s actually a common look for real-world snow parkas or if I just think it is because of Leia’s Hoth outfit. The white color is most definitely not inspired by Leia though since I had already decided long ago that all of Sky’s outfits would be predominantly white since I really like that white-on-blue look.
Time with Sky.
Famous last words in that first panel there……
Obviously, Bennesaud has tubes of quick-setting mortar in his pouches — what else would a rock creature have in their first aid kit?
Your commentary will be of great use to me if I ever try to improve my art skills. The really hard part will be resisting the temptation to directly steal the final designs, though . . . they look so good . . .
Short version: great work, and I appreciate the insight of your commentary.
