Back in 2000, my wife and I went to India for about two weeks. Although I knew to expect it, it was still very surreal to see cows and other animals out and about everywhere, sitting by busy roadsides, lounging on stairs in front of landmark sites, etc. So when it came time to do the Oniaka city-station, I wanted to incorporate that feel by having their equivalent of cattle lounging around in various public places.
I lived in New Dehli for 3 years and saw exactly what you’re talking about on a daily basis. Did you happen to see the guys with the dancing monkeys or the guys who walk around with a bamboo pole across their shoulders and a bag on each end. In one bag would be a cobra and in the other would be a mongoose. If you paid a couple of rupees, you’d see them fight right in front of you! Pretty wild…
I had a similar experience when I went to India as well.
Never saw the mongoose and cobra guys. I would have felt bad paying to make them fight, but it would have been cool to see!
I actually just got back from a 2-week trip to Morocco (our first major vacation since the India trip) and it was awesome. Just before I left, I inked some pages from the new RUNNERS story featuring a Bocce flashback. I wasn’t 100% happy with the architectural concepting on those pages, but coming back from Morocco, I might go back and re-work those pages with some new-found inspiration.
