This was one of those science things where I wasn’t sure if the hull breach would begin to suck everything out, including Cember, Bennes, Bocce, and Ril, and all the canisters. But I figured there could be an automatic ship safety mechanism whereby any hull breach would instantaneously trigger an increase in the intensity of the gravity plates in the flooring to counteract the pull of the breach and keep things grounded and not sucked out into space.
This page is also the first showcasing of Bocce’s weird energy arm and some of its abilities. Many readers have been asking me about the arm. All I’ll say is that I love drawing it, it looks even cooler in the color series, and its origin will certainly be revealed in time.
I don’t suppose Bocce is named for his skill in lawn sports?
His name was actually a nod to Star Wars, but I wanted it to be something a bit subtle. So I settled on Bocce, which is the language Uncle Owen asks C-3PO if he speaks during the droid sale. I’m not sure if it’s actually spelled the same way, and since I wasn’t sure how to spell it at the time, I just decided to go with the lawn game spelling.
Bocce IS quite proficient at lawn games though and has several trophies for croquet. Not really.
must be hot stuff at darts, though
wouldn’t that mean people get crushed/torn apart?
Good point. I guess I was imagining it as something that worked more like a field that envelopes them to some extent. So it isn’t just a flat surface of “pull” at the floor level counteracting the pull of space, which would definitely put a lot of strain on the body.
well their goes any notion i had that the human looking character was normal also i never thought of using a hole breach to escape a ship pretty clever… i hope those guys have some means of propersion though others their going to be floating for a long time
Yeah, I actually designed those backpack gizmos with the idea that they are part jetpack/propulsion and part energy shield generator. The jetpack allows them to direct their flight in space while the shield provides a self-contained environment that allows them to survive the cold and vacuum.
