I was really happy with how the parting shots between Grissom and Roka turned out as I think it kinda captures the unspoken moment between them, knowing how things are going to turn out.
As for Roka’s room layout, when I drew up plans for the ship, I did determine that his room would be one of the two rooms at the front of the living quarters, making up the rounded part of the ship right next to the cockpit. So I wanted to make sure the window shape was consistent with the shape of that window from the outside.
Is he naked? And why does his species have nipples? Is that a belly button? When is the sequel coming out? 🙂
Uh…those are alien sensory organs on his chest. And he has…uh…an extra alien auditory orifice in his stomach. They just look like nipples and a belly button. 🙂 And is he naked or wearing boxers? Or briefs? You decide!
As for the sequel, I mention in the FAQ that it should start posting in early Sept. I’m very psyched to finally get that story out. So far, it’s coming along great and looks very cool in color. Plus, I might have more alien nipples and belly buttons in it!
Hi all,
It’s Peggy–Sean’s wife. I just wanted to point out that this page, top row, third panel, is the spot that made me stop and realize that comics is what Sean should be doing. Up until this point, it was still an adventure and was happy to go along and see what happened next. But Roka’s face in particular got me and after that I became much more serious about supporting Sean’s comic career.
And in re-reading the whole flashback sequence, I still love it. One of my favorite parts!
Yeah, that panel was the kicker on this page for me as well. Excellent use of body language to convey a whole range of emotions. Now if your husband would just do more, more, more, more! I remember meeting Sean at a comic convention (Chicago or Philly I think) shortly before or after the trade came out. The wait for a sequel has been similar to seeing Empire Strikes Back and waiting those interminable years for Return of the Jedi. The never ending question is always “What happens NEXT!?”.
I hear ya! And believe me, the delays have been agonizing on my end as well, especially when I KNOW what’s coming next and I’m really psyched to tell those stories. But I think after years of having to take paying freelance work at the expense of working on RUNNERS, I may have finally landed a system that will allow me to do both more-or-less simultaneously. So my plan is to get a new story arc out EVERY YEAR (or at least something very close to every year), which will be a marked improvement over the last few years. Ugh.
I really like the way the flashback bridges the two “present-time” scenes.
Yeah, given that the flashback centers on Roka and Grissom, I thought it would be cool if the flashback started with one of them and ended with the other.
There are plans for the ship? I’d love to see them!
There are definitely plans drawn out for the ship (one of the last times I really used my architectural drafting schooling!). It’s not done up in specific detail, but was drawn so I’d have an idea how the ship is laid out, room-wise. I’ll have to post that as one of the upcoming Bonus Features. Thanks for reminding me!
I like how Grissom’s face sort of says “Go, I’ll hold them off.” which honestly explains her telling Roka he doesn’t need to apologize for leaving her behind.
Cynical though they all’ve become over the years, underneath it all, there’s genuine caring there.
Yay! Yeah, I’m glad I was able to convey exactly that through just the subtle facial expressions of the characters. These silent pages were definitely a fun but challenging sequence to do.
