I have Bocce’s whole story planned out but wasn’t sure where I’d be dropping all the info over the course of the series. But since I had already started it with Volume 2, I figured I really should continue fleshing it out with Volume 3 rather than let it sit fallow for too long. The tricky thing was trying to find ways to naturally transition from events in the present to scenes of Bocce’s flashback. I wanted it to feel organic to the actual story and not just tacked on. Basically, in each case, something about the present had to jog his memory of a particular flashback. In this case, Jayd asking Bocce about his arm led to a good excuse to have Bocce think back to his farm days.
Dural: “It’s because you touch yourself at night!”
Bocce: “WHAT?! REALLY?!”
Dural: “No, not really. I’m just messing with you. Think of it as a little payback for being the least entertaining houseguest ever for weeks.”
You’re fleshing out the story of Bocce’s arm, so to speak.
And boom!
The history of Bocce and his pahjan receives another layer.
Maybe it’s the haircut, but this reminded me of Neo’s awakening in the first Matrix movie.
