Snow Job Ch 05 Pg 01

In this sequence, I decided to try something a little different with my coloring. Usually, I make the shading colors just darker and more saturated versions of their respective base colors. But for this sequence, I decided to just do all the shading as a single blue-gray color in a Photoshop layer set to Multiply. Instead of just making shaded areas darker, it also adds a blue-ish tint. The process is a bit of a shortcut over the regular way I work, but for a nighttime scene, I thought the blue-ish tint to the shadows would work.

The layout of the location was a bit tough to get right. I wanted it to have some fairly open areas but I also needed it to be filled with enough stuff (huts, shacks, rock outcroppings, etc) for everyone to hide behind during the actual fighting. I think it ended up hitting the right balance.

I like the shading. It makes it feel more like a snowy, blustery nighttime – like the white snow is reflecting back some ambient light and softening the shadows.

    I definitely love Cember =)

  3. Great page, yeah Cember is definitely a favorite 🙂

It may have been a shortcut, but after comparing it with some of the ‘outdoor’ panels from chapter 4’s last pages it actually looks better.
You can be like the George Lucas of comics and release a special blue tint edition of The Big Snow Job! 😀

Here’s hoping The Candy Bandit puts some clever shots on display!
